My Revamped Workspace

Filed under: Confessional, Other, Photography, Thoughts — Tags: , , , , , , — Raymond Chan @ 10:02 pm

I was driving past OfficeWorks last Friday after renewing my passport when I casually asked L if she wanted to drop by the store to have a quick look before we head home. “Why not?”, she said. It proved to be one of my biggest mistakes this year when we had a temporary high of furniture shopping.

It started with a computer desk which L decided to get for my Valentine’s. Then, a bookshelf to go with it. This followed with a reclining chair which I later realised that I’d need a new chair mat to go with since I’m giving my old ones to my nephew.

Total damage to the wallet after a couple of hours:

$150 bookshelf
$180 chair
$120 chair mat
$200 computer desk (thanks for the desk, L)

After a lot of heavy lifting and a LOT of assembling with the help of my mate (Jay), my room now looks completely different.

Lo and behold, my brand new, revamped workspace.

Please ignore the messy, pink (and mismatched) bed-sheet and the brown towel on the new chair.

A neater shot.

All I need now is a pot of fake plant for the desk, a small bedside table, and a coat hanger (to hang my towels and jackets). I really should have gotten all the furniture from IKEA though (I think it’s cheaper and better there). Ah wells, maybe next time.

I’m officially broke.

Logitech Z-2300 2.1 Speakers

Filed under: Confessional, Other, Photography, Review — Tags: , , , , , , — Raymond Chan @ 8:38 am

What can I say.. It was an impulse buy, I admit. Well, I just couldn’t help myself. L was a little upset at me for spending $160 instead of saving up to pay for my bills (sorry!). Nonetheless, I did not regret one bit with my purchase. I bought mine from PLE Computers.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is the speakers to go for if you are not into the 5.1 channel speakers. Logitech Z-2300 is without a shred of doubt the BEST 2.1 speakers that I’ve ever seen (heard).

The reason I went for a 2.1 is because:

  • My room is small-ish. A decent 5.1 (Z-5500) will be an overkill, in terms of price (2x as much) and power (2x as much). Actually, the Z-2300 that I have now really is a little overkill too, but still….
  • There isn’t really much space in my room for the speakers, really.

Sound clarity, “thunderous” bass (which is not an understatement), distortion free, powerful, and not forgetting to mention the fact that it’s a decent looking set of speakers that will complement most desktop/laptop/video game consoles.

This, is the 2.1 speakers to have, easily surpassing el-cheapo 5.1 channel speakers any time, any day. Yes, I’m biased, so sue me.

Now, who would be interested in a pair of Logitech R-20? :P

Desktop Update

It’s almost time to say goodbye to my trusty laptop. My desktop should be ready for use by the end of next week, if not this week. As of now, I only have three parts in hand – the motherboard, RAM and hard drive.

If you can’t read fine prints, it’s:

  • Motherboard Gigabyte EP45-DS3L
  • RAM DDR2-800 Kingston 2GB-Kit
  • Hard Drive 320GB SATA-II Samsung 16MB Cache 7200rpm

I will still need:

  • CPU (still deciding between Dual Core E8400 and Quad Core Q6600, and it’s a tough one to make)
  • Case (Lian-Li preferably, but opting for Antec’s Sonata due to Lian-Li’s heavy price)
  • Power Supply of around 500W (if not included with casing)
  • Monitor (22″ LCD 2ms), thinking of the Samsung 2253LW but having second thoughts now. I’d also need to rent a Spyder from the local CameraHouse to calibrate the monitor for accurate colours, too.
  • Video Card (an average one for day to day use, but good enough for casual gaming)
  • Sound Card (make it the cheapest since I’m not investing in speakers at the moment)
  • DVD-Writer
  • Keyboard and mouse (I know. I’m pathetic)

It should set me back about at least another $800 or so, but hopefully less as I’m pretty tight on money right now.

Time to sleep, too much of me trying to understand all these computer jargons.

Impulsivity (II)

I just bought a couple of items from eBay:

The hood isn’t exactly compulsory, but it’s really annoying seeing how “naked” the lens look by itself, especially when I use the lens in most situations. I still don’t get why Nikon Corporation decides not to include the hood with the kit lens.

This is a “fake” version of Stofen’s Omnibounce, about 1/5th the price of the original Stofen. But what difference will it make? It’s still plastic and I’m sure the results will still be more pleasing on the eye than bare flash by the Speedlight, bounced or not.

I just had to say this – photography makes me feel broke! :(

P.S. A friend’s cousin is looking for an assistant photographer. I’m seriously considering it although I may not be what he is looking for.

Ins and Outs

Filed under: Observation, Rough Times, Thoughts, Work — Tags: , , , , — Raymond Chan @ 2:44 am

It’s been a while since my last wordy post. I’m physically and emotionally exhausted (from work, specifically) as I type this, but somehow I just needed the ranting space. Of course, being a blogger, the natural abode to rant is the blog – and so this rant is of existence.

Work has been taking up most of my social and personal life. My weeks have been filled with painfully long hours, pain-in-the-ass customers, unforgiving managers, and hi-bye colleagues. Money has been flowing in and out, with obviously more outs than ins.

Of course, being on a long holiday, the natural thing to do would be to work and work more, with the thought that by working more, the outs will be hopefully reduced and more ins will be allowed that will hopefully allow me to save up for a trip next year, or perhaps even for emergency use when the need arises.

Of course, if things had been going as planned, this blog entry wouldn’t be of existence.

With reference to the pain-in-the-ass customers, sometimes, I wish I could shove my fist into the customers’ face who deserve the fist. Examples:

  • The type of customers that stands at the (salad/dessert) bar, that puts their hands on their hips whilst waiting for their food with the face that says, punch me, and when the food is finally placed in front of their face, a simple word of gratitude is not uttered from their foul mouth, but more whining instead.
  • The type of customers that are at least twice your age but has a mentality of someone below 12. This can be seen from angry customers who seem to be constantly shouting at you, who requires extra loving care and attention, the type of tender loving care from Raymond Chan himself – a fist to his/her face.
  • And more

Unfortunately, I am still needing this job to make sure I have adequate ins to compensate for the outs that I cannot seem to control, no matter how hard I try. So you have a great weekend while I slave away to earn my ins that will eventually be outs on the same day it goes in.
