Forte Music Festival 2009

This entry is not bandwidth-friendly

I was recently asked to be the photographer for Forte School of Music’s annual festival at Riverview church at Cockburn Central. It is a day where the students in the school have a chance to get up on stage and perform for their family and teachers. There were two concerts of a different time with different performances by the students and different sets of audience, who are mainly made up of family members of the students.

The first concert started at 3.30pm and another at 5.30pm, so this post is a combination of both concerts.

It was quite a challenge to photograph the event because the only long zoom I have is the 55-200mm, which I personally think is not a fast enough lens for the lighting condition at the venue, so I used a combination of  my Tamron 17-50mm 2.8, 55-200mm, 50mm 1.8 and a tripod. Most shots were taken at ISO of 800 and a few 1600, but really if my body could handle 1600 and 3200 well enough I would definitely use those range, but unfortunately it can’t. Perhaps I should really start saving up for a D90 or D300s? Wishful thinking.

Despite the high stress and running around like a madman with my camera from one end of the stage to the other, it was a great experience.

Here are some shots from the event:

Targa West 2009 Pics

Some photos from Targa West 2009 at Toodyay, about 90km from Perth.

There are a total of 1200 photos from Targa West 2009, of which I haven’t even seen all of it so far. But here are 24 shots which I think people want to see. There are a couple of Nissan GTRs, Porsche 911, Lotus Elise, and of course, an i30 SX CRDi (unfortunately all the i30 shots turned out unsatisfactory). It was my first attempt at panning photography, so 70/80 per cent of my shots turned out kinda unsatisfactory.

Some overexposed, out of focus, not composed properly, etc. Oh, and we were in the spectator zone, so there were no way to get a better spot than the spot we were standing at, so all shots came back with the same angle. I remember I crossed the tape that kept us in the area for like a minute and the “marshall” came and asked me to go back behind the tape.

AN EXPLOSION at a Caltex-Woolworths petrol station caused by a petrol tanker has led to the evacuation of homes, shops and businesses of up to 500m in Maddington, which is at the south-east side of Perth.

It was reported that the one compartment of the tanker exploded at about 1.45pm.

Around 24 fire trucks were at the scene to put the blaze down to stop the fire from spreading to the station and surrounding area.

Fire and Emergency Services Authority spokesman said that the fire at the station had been put under control by 2.45pm.

The tanker was believed to be carrying 40,000 litres of unleaded petrol and the fire occurred when a compartment of the tanker caught fire and ruptured.

There has been damage to the petrol station’s forecourt and part of the shop, and it was reported by an eyewitness that a few cars were burnt in the incident.

Police is currently still assisting the evacuation and directing traffic away from the scene.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area.

Halfpipe at the Perth Royal Show 2008

There were a couple of youths showing their BMX and skateboarding skills at the halfpipe in Perth Royal Show this year, and I managed to capture a few shots from there.

IMG_0117 (Custom) Pictures were taken with Canon Digital Ixus 75.

Pretty decent shots coming out from a compact, really.

I have a strong feeling about receiving my camera within these couple of days :)

Shihad at Murdoch University Open Day 2008

Shihad is an alternative rock band based in New Zealand. Its current band members comprise of Jon Toogood (vocals, guitars), Phil Knight (guitars, backing vocals), Karl Kippenberger (bass guitars, backing vocals) and Tom Larkin (drums, backing vocals, samplers). More of Shihad here.

I’ve not heard of Shihad prior to Murdoch University’s open day, but after a little Googling, it appears that Shihad has a decent fan base, mainly from NZ and Australia. Although I’m not particularly fond of this genre of music, I am still fascinated by Shihad’s energy and confidence. I enjoyed seeing how they work the crowd up to a great ending to their performance, too.

Murdoch University Open Day 2008 was held a couple of days ago and I dragged L with me since she had never been to one and we had nothing else planned on the day. Of course, I was also keen to take some photos of live bands since I’ve never done that before. Other bands include Myles Vincent (missed this one) and The Silents (another entry for this band).

I equipped myself with my Nikon D60, mainly with the 55-200mm VR and 18-55mm VR kit lens, accompanied with my SB-600 strobe for fill flash.

Anyway, on to the shots (which I spent a bit of time with post-processing today). Enjoy!
