SB-400 to SB-600

My 52mm HOYA Circular Polariser was sent yesterday after the payment was cleared. Today, my SB-600 Speedlight was sent as well. I can’t wait to play with both toys. I’ve even downloaded the flash’s user manual and read halfway through cause the seller couldn’t find the manual. Too bad my Nikon D60 cannot be used as a commander (to control the flash wirelessly off the hotshoe).

So I’ve made an impulsive decision when I bought the SB-600 online. But that’s not without any proper reason. I noticed that even though I’ve been using my SB400 with my self-made SB-400 flash bounce diffuser, (portrait orientation) shots has been coming out with harsh shadows from the side of my subject. The only way to reduce the shadow is by bouncing off the ceiling in portrait orientation, but is quite impossible unless my flash is able to rotate horizontally.

So here, I’ll list out the main reasons I upgraded to an SB-600 from my SB-400:

  1. Ability to rotate horizontally (hence the ability to bounce off the wall even in portrait orientation).
  2. Faster recycle time.
  3. More powerful flash.
  4. Ability to get more creative with the shots (with different diffusers/colour gels (which I probably wouldn’t use)/etc.
  5. Controls on the flash itself which saves heaps of time.

As I am keen to further my knowledge in flash photography (especially in portrait and food), this buy won’t be regretted :)

Impulsivity

June 26, 2008 | Filed Under Accessories/Equipment, Confessional, Photography | 2 Comments

Impulsivity costed me AUD$183 (plus postage) today. I bought a used SB-600 Flash about an hour ago from eBay, and to think that a while back, I used to tell cheahwey not to buy anything from eBay. Anyone know how long before you have to pay for the item?

I just paid for the item and it should be here by the end of next week, if everything goes smoothly. Let’s just hope the condition of the flash is as good as it was described.

(Edit) 52mm HOYA Circular Polarising Filter on its way

June 24, 2008 | Filed Under Accessories/Equipment, Confessional, Photography | 10 Comments

Another one of those Confessional entries. I’ve just won the bid for the 52mm Circular Polarising Filter in eBay. The price including shipping is AUD$28.50. A brand new one costs close to AUD$80 in Harvey Norman (I checked today).

Then again, I sort of regretted getting the 3 year-old filter where I could have gotten a brand new one from HK for the same price. That’s for not checking properly. And that’s a AUD$30 lesson to learn.

EDIT: There was a mistake by the seller of the polariser that I won in eBay and the seller agreed to cancel the purchase. After sorting out the issue, I purchased a brand new 52mm HOYA Circular Polarising Filter for AUD$27. The item is located in HK, so it might take a couple of weeks before it arrives. Well, looks like I wasn’t ripped off after all =)
