2009 – The Year That Was

As I sit down, drinking my Corona Extra after a long night at work and pondering upon the year 2009, I would say the year had gone past in a flash, just like every other years. So the year had its ups and downs, with a mixture of both to balance things up.

Happy stuff. I will be graduating in my double major Public Relations/Journalism degree this March after finding out yesterday that for my semester two results, I received two distinctions and a credit. I’m fairly comfortable with that as this semester was probably the most effort I’ve given in my three-year university life. I also just realised that of all the three years, six semesters of studies, I have taken 20 units with only one High Distinction. But I’m not the type who aims for the moon, so I’m fairly happy to settle among the clouds.

At work, I was transferred to the kitchen from the salad bar after my request late last year and have finally learned how to cook a proper steak to perfection – rare, mid-rare, medium, mid-well, well-done. Rumps, T-bones, petite fillets, grilled chicken, BBQ ribs, burgers. I’ve also developed a love and hate passion for the fryers, where I cooked chips, shrimps, calamari rings, nuggets, etc. The list just goes on and on but it had been a fun and challenging place to work in.

I was also recently “promoted” to be a salad bar certified trainer, meaning I get to wear a different coloured badge, but that’s not exactly a promotion as it involves a great deal of responsibility. Fellow colleagues don’t seem to understand that, unfortunately, but that’s another story. Then again, I’ll be looking for what people say, a “proper” job as soon as my CV/Resume are completed, so this job is not a keeper as far as I know.

Another happy note, I have become an uncle to a niece last Monday.

I have also purchased my very first brand new car this year and received it in August, which is a Hyundai i30 SX 2.0L Manual Hatchback.

Other happy things that happened this year – my photo was published for the first time (although just an ad), I bought a great lens earlier this year, taken reception photos for two lovely couples, Jack and Annie in April and Fadh and Winnie in August, photographed a school music concert in November for the very first time, photographed a rally for the very first time, and recently I was also asked by Annie to photograph her maternity photos.

As I said, there are the downs to every ups. Just like the Yin and Yang. Darkness and light. White and black. Evil and good. Fat and thin. Old and young. You get the drift.

Not-so-happy stuff. So my almost two-year relationship with L ended sometime in late July/early August. I think. I don’t think she knows exactly when either, but it was around that period of time when it happened. It was pretty much a mutual decision, and there wasn’t really a specific reason as to why it ended, but as long as we’re both happy with our decision, things will only get better from then.

Earlier in June, I contracted Swine flu. It wasn’t the best thing to happen to anyone, but I would say it was an experience to remember – being quarantined, getting calls from the health department every day to check on you. It almost felt like the movie, Blindess, but not that tragic of course, heh. But I survived and even blogged about it, so it’s not that bad I guess!

Now that I think about it, there isn’t really much that I can write about the downs worth mentioning for this past year other than the two I’ve already mentioned. Other not-so-happy times are mostly some of the assignments in uni that gives me the headaches and sometimes from work, but that’s life, no?

Now that I’ve listed the goodies and baddies this year, the ups have outweighed the downs, so I suppose I have had a good 2009. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for the year 2010, where hopefully things will be better in terms of my wallet, work, health, and who knows, love.

I have also recently found out that I meet the minimum requirements for permanent residency application in Australia, so hopefully I can get the application sorted out ASAP.

Before I keep rambling on, I should probably stop here. Hereby, I wish each and every one of you a Merry, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Have a great and safe end of year! :)

Lucielle Pt 3

I finally started my final assignment this semester after work late last night and ended up finishing and submitting it online at 9.30am this morning. What a “spectacular” feat to pull off with 50 per cent of it contributing to my final grade. Let’s hope I don’t screw it up.

With that I am happy to announce my unofficial semester break starting today until 3rd August, which is 70 full days. The reason it’s unofficial is because other students are currently studying for their exams, but my units do not consist of examinations for some reason.

Anyway. here are some new shots of Lucielle, who is now 3 months old. It was taken a couple of nights ago when her family came over for dinner.

There’s so many more shots of her and I am happy to say that most of them turned out beautifully. All shots taken with Tamron 17-50mm 2.8, flash bounced to the wall behind me. I might post more shots of her, but I think that’s enough of Lucielle for a while.

I’m still waiting on my vertical grip for d60, I might post some photos up when I get it.

Have a good week ahead everyone.

Visitor’s Parking Fee Increase

Seriously? That’s a 100 per cent increase and no more per day rate?

dsc 4789 large 640x433 Visitors Parking Fee IncreaseBefore

What were they thinking? How do the university expect students who do not purchase the permits (like me) be able to afford a parking ticket from 8am-4.15pm (for a whopping $16.50!)?

How is this going to bring more visitors to the university?

A suggestion to students without permit like me: Don’t pay for tickets. Instead, just park and if you do get a fine of $20, you’ll end up paying only $10 (after the 21 day 50 per cent discount) anyway.

You’re welcome.

NO FIGURES: Police say drinkers should still be alert even though drink spiking in WA is rare.

The extent of drink spiking in WA remains largely unknown with no official figures being kept by either police or health authorities.

Inquiries by eMUnews this week to the Drug and Alcohol Office revealed that no official records of incidents of spiking, when a drug is placed in a person’s drink without them knowing, had been released or kept since 2005.

DAO drugs program manager Melanie Chatfield said it was four years since figures had been available on drink spiking in WA.

WA Police spokesman Sergeant Greg Lambert said spiking was very rare and although police did not keep statistics on it, all reported cases would be investigated.

He said education was the simple answer to preventing drink spiking.

“It’s all about protecting yourself,” he said.

“You lose rational perception and are then vulnerable to sexual assaults after drink spiking.”

A Royal Perth Hospital media spokeswoman told eMUnews no data on drink spiking was kept by the hospital.

“It is not much of an issue and patients usually report that they are unwell, so there are no figures or data being kept,” she said.

Ms Chatfield said although reports of spiking were rare it was still important for people to be aware of the potential.

“To avoid drink spiking always buy your own drink and watch it being poured,” she said.

“Don’t accept drinks from strangers and never leave your drink unattended while you dance or go to the toilet.

“Don’t drink or taste anyone else’s drink, and stop drinking anything that you think tastes odd.”

Metro City Concert Club media spokesman also told eMUnews that drink spiking was not an issue at the club.

“There hasn’t been any incident of drink spiking that I know of since I joined 2.5 years ago,” he said.

“Bartenders go through the Responsible Service of Alcohol course and they are taught to pour drinks down the drain if the drinks are left unattended.”

He said the high price of drinks was also probably contributing to the low incidence of spiking because patrons tended to hold onto their drinks more.

“It is the patrons’ responsibility to look after their drinks,” he said.

“We’ve done all we can.”

First Anniversary

Filed under: Announcement, Life in Uni, Rough Times — Tags: , , , , , , — Raymond Chan @ 4:35 pm

Mandatory post.

Two good news.

  1. Today marks the first year of ChanRaymond dot net.
  2. My Nikon D60 is on its way from the insurance company in Melbourne (or was it Sydney). Give it until Monday :)

I have just requested an extension for an assignment with the reason that I am doing a crap job at it. I sure hope it will be granted. If not, I’m screwed because it’s due in 30 minutes time.

All comments will be replied tomorrow.
