Impulsivity (II)

July 29, 2008 | Filed Under Accessories/Equipment, Announcement, General, Photography | 6 Comments

I just bought a couple of items from eBay:

The hood isn’t exactly compulsory, but it’s really annoying seeing how “naked” the lens look by itself, especially when I use the lens in most situations. I still don’t get why Nikon Corporation decides not to include the hood with the kit lens.

This is a “fake” version of Stofen’s Omnibounce, about 1/5th the price of the original Stofen. But what difference will it make? It’s still plastic and I’m sure the results will still be more pleasing on the eye than bare flash by the Speedlight, bounced or not.

I just had to say this - photography makes me feel broke! :(

P.S. A friend’s cousin is looking for an assistant photographer. I’m seriously considering it although I may not be what he is looking for.

10 Reasons Why Firefox 3 is Better Than Firefox 2

June 14, 2008 | Filed Under General | 2 Comments

Firefox

After blogging on the release date of Firefox 3 yesterday, I was asked to compile reasons why Firefox 3 is worth upgrading and better than Firefox 2, so I had come up with this list.

Why Firefox 3 is Better Than Firefox 2:

  1. Auto Complete URL has been revamped.
    - the auto-complete URL bar is now “smarter” than before, remembering visited pages and also bookmarked pages when you’re typing in the URL.
  2. Zooming in is much better in Firefox 3.
    - instead of just zooming in on the texts, you get to zoom in on the whole layout of the page in the browser.
  3. Password manager is not cluttering your view in FF3.
    - it sits on the top of the browser and still loads the page while you can choose to save the password for a particular page.
  4. Ability to resume and pause downloads.
    - self-explanatory. FF2 doesn’t have this feature.
  5. Resize location bars.
    - self-explanatory.
  6. New “star” bookmark.
    - makes it easier to bookmark a page. A star is visible on the location bar and clicking on it once will auto-bookmark the page you’re on while clicking it again will enable you to rename the bookmark and add tags.
  7. Use ctrl (command key in Mac) to select multiple text from different parts of a page.
    - easier to quote articles. Basically similar to copying different files from your computer, but in this case, texts.
  8. Ability to save sessions.
    - you can choose to save a session and quit the browser when you have multiple tabs opened.
  9. Smart bookmarks.
    - a bookmark that compiles the “most visited” pages and “recently bookmarked” pages allows easy access to your favourite websites on the go.
  10. Less memory usage.
    - self-explanatory.

Bookmark your calendar and get ready to break the world record this coming Tuesday, 17 June! =)

Photography, Work, etc

June 2, 2008 | Filed Under General, Photography, Thoughts | 2 Comments

I wanted to head out for a good photoshoot on Saturday, but my plans changed when it started raining cats and dogs and elephants from 9 in the morning. So I ended up doing nothing at home other than playing MGS3 on my PS2.

MGS3

I had gotten myself a job (like finally) at a local dining restaurant, a decent one which I intend to work at for the rest of my uni life (crosses fingers). I’m starting this Thursday, in charge of the Salad Bar (stocking up, preparing the salads, cleaning, etc) as a trainee, of course. I so can’t wait to get out of traineeship in order to get more shifts and (slightly) better pay.

On Sunday, I got a little sick, probably due to the fact that I have been sleeping around 4-5ish in the morning. I can only play the PS2 after everyone is asleep (ie. my nephew). Was a little feverish and got a little migraine and dizziness, but they weren’t enough to stop me from watching movies.

Anyway, I’m typing these because I feel like I want to get some stuff out from my system. It’s been a while and it feels so good to be able to crap all these things out.

Have a great week ahead =)

Edit: Something is wrong with my Firefox 3 RC1/Beta 5. I can’t seem to click on stuffs like Accept/Ignore in Facebook and also stuffs like Upload Image from Computer/Browse from Wordpress. I think it has something to do with the Javascript, but I can’t figure out how to fix it. I tried reinstalling, but the problem still arises. So, I’m using IE8 Beta 1 right now to type this. Hopefully Firefox 3 RC2 will fix my problem. Still can’t imagine using IE8 as my primary browser.

Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1 is Good?

May 30, 2008 | Filed Under General, Questions, Thoughts | 3 Comments

I’m really impressed with the performance of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1, so impressed that I’m actually currently using this browser to type this entry. Browsing is smooth and fast, and other than some texts not displaying correctly in certain pages, there are no issue at all. I fixed the text display issue by “emulating” IE7 browser, basically to change IE8’s look to IE7’s.

I still can’t believe how fast the pages load. Compared to Firefox, I must say that some pages such as Facebook load much faster than my Firefox 3 Beta 5. And this is only IE8’s first beta.

Impressive. Do have a go with IE8 and tell me how did it go.

Ps. For the record, I’ll still stick with Firefox and use IE8 when it’s absolutely necessary.

UPDATE: I still think that tab loads much faster with Firefox, or perhaps it’s just my laptop’s sluggish performance.

UPDATE 2: IE8 Beta 1 seems to be quite unstable. It has crashed about 4 times just today when I used it for normal browsing. Let’s hope Microsoft fixes it in the next release.

Highlights of the Week

March 7, 2008 | Filed Under General | Leave a Comment

This week has got to be the week I slacked off the most since the year started. I’ll put some of the highlights of this week in key points:

  1. I had only worked for a day this since Monday (Monday was Labour Day in WA).
  2. I had only attended uni for a day (which is today).
  3. I MAY be owning a dSLR really soon (more on that another day).
  4. I will be attending my first family wedding come April (more on that another day).
  5. I will be getting my strung brand new racquet tonight in badminton (more on that another day).
  6. I am behind on my readings only after three weeks since this semester started (refer to point 2)
  7. I am going off for a job interview at 4.30pm today (will update on that soon, fingers crossed).

I’ve had an eventful week, good and bad. Hope yours was the same, if not better. Off to tutorial now.

Have a splendid weekend =)

The Good Samaritan

February 25, 2008 | Filed Under General | 1 Comment

I played the role of the Good Samaritan last night.

After a sending L home via the train last night, I got back to Murdoch Station where I parked my car. Upon reaching the station, I saw this Chinese kid who spoke no English and didn’t even know how to use the public telephone. He was stranded in Murdoch Station, so I lent him my phone for him to call his family. The family didn’t know how to get to the station.

I offered to send him home, but he refused. I continued on my way home. A couple of corners from my house, his father called. He told me he doesn’t know how to get to Murdoch Station, so once again, I offered to return to pick his son up. He said okay, so a big U-turn I made and picked him up at the station.

Such a polite kid he was, he thanked me again and again even after I dropped him off at his house in Willeton. Later in the night (around 11pm when I was fast asleep), his father called me, going, “eh! xie xie ni ah” (thank you) repeatedly.

My mummy would be proud of me. lol

ps. I didn’t even know how to get to Willeton until I called a couple of friends. Thanks to you two, I know how to get there.
