ChanRaymond dot net Turns Two!

Believe it or not, today marks ChanRaymond dot net’s 2nd anniversary!

Raymond Chan

This site has come a long way, from a personal blog filled with gibberish and entries about my life in uni, to a more photography-centric type of entries with less words and more pictures. I have also been lazy to comment on others’ blogs, so I’m back to being a silent reader of others’ blogs. Of course, this has caused me to lose quite a few frequent readers and commenters which I have built from my previous blog(s), but I still have some readers who will make the extra effort to leave some feedback on my entries, and that is more than welcomed here on ChanRaymond dot net.

As I am currently in the last couple of weeks of my university life for the rest of my life (fingers crossed), updates have been halted to a point where I only update when I find the time, and often when I do, it’s an entry with less than 50 words (and I’m a to-be journalism graduate!). Of course, I do try to put in more pictures to fill the “gap”, but I must admit that it’s plain laziness at work.

Nevertheless, I personally take this time to thank all loyal readers of my blog, to all who still find time to read all the craps I’ve churned out. Even though I have been really lazy with my updates lately, there were still people giving feedback to my pictures, which really gives me the “feel-good” factor. To be honest, there has been a couple of instances when I considered quitting blogging due to work and uni, to which I can barely handle. But I guess I shall give it another year (since I’ve paid for the hosting) and we’ll see what next year brings.

Before I delay this entry any further and risk not publishing this entry at all, I shall stop here and get some rest after a long night of uni work. Have a wonderful weekend ahead and thanks for reading!

Today..

Filed under: Confessional, General, Humour — Tags: , , , , , , , , — Raymond Chan @ 12:39 pm

.. I woke up to 4 degrees celsius and a text message. Boy, was it cold, especially when I’m used to sleeping without my shirt on.

My mum texted me to tell me to apply aloe vera/rose hip oil to my burn from the last couple of weeks. Shocked, I asked her how she knew about my burn. She replied “from your blog lo“. I’ve been trying to keep this blog as low-profile as I could (from my family anyway), but of course that isn’t easy when keywords such as “chanraymond” and “raymond chan” are plastered on Google’s front page (lol).

When asked how she knew about my blog existence, this was what she had to say:

Screenshot0002 Today..

My mum’s quite tech-savvy, no? Hehe. She Googles my name every now and then to check on me.

And I forgot about her birthday! :S But… that’s because I just woke up. But all’s good now after we sms-ed and talked on the phone for a bit :P

And.. Happy Birthday mum! :)

Car Shopping

Filed under: Announcement, Confessional, Photography — Tags: , , , , , , — Raymond Chan @ 1:26 am

I’ve been busy this past week, shopping. Car shopping, to be exact.

I am getting rid of my 1990 Toyota Supra for a new 2009 Hyundai i30 SX, manual. Yes, it’s two totally different car. One consumes fuel like water, the other uses the fuel to its full capacity. The Hyundai i30 is my money lifesaver. So why the i30, but not a Jazz, Yaris or Swift, which are all quite reputable in this class of cars? I don’t know why, but I do like the i30 a lot. My second and third choice was the Suzuki Swift (Limited Edition) and Toyota Yaris, which I went for the test drives earlier this week, but didn’t manage to come up with an agreeable deal with both dealers.

Frankly, I didn’t even test drive the i30! But as far as I was concerned, getting rid of my Supra was my main priority. I could no longer feed the moneybox any more after it showed signs of failing me. Not only the fuel consumption is extreme, the regulator needs replacing. The tyres are balding. The electronics are stuffed up. The central locking is playing up. Even the paint is starting to peel off. And worst of all, it’s starting to feel like a 20 year old car. Wait, it IS a 20 year old car! For the past week or so, I have had to knock the alternator/regulator with a steel rod almost every time before I drive the car to get the car battery charging while the car is running.

Anyway, this is how the i30 should look like when it arrives mid/end of this month:

I spotted this one a couple of days ago and mine should look exactly like this except for the colour. I had initially wanted to get this colour, but upon reaching for an agreement, I was told by the salesperson that Hyundai will be announcing a new set of colours for the next batch to replace the current ones. Mine will apparently come with a lighter shade of grey compared to the one above, to which the colour is not even seen anywhere. Apparently, there are still no brochures, nothing on the website or the WWW about the new Hyper Silver colour, which I am keeping my fingers crossed that I will like it!

Anyway, hopefully everything goes well and when I do get my new car, I’ll be sure to upload the images :) Have a good weekend!

I’m a Swine Flu Survivor

I am a swine flu survivor.

For the past week I have been taking Tamiflu tablets twice a day, prescribed by the health department for swine influenza patients. Personally, I think swine flu is a little overrated sensationalised by the media at the moment.

This is especially true when the death of the first Australian with swine flu was reported earlier today. For Pete’s sake he already had medical problems so he probably died due to his other illness in the first place. There is certainly no need to highlight the fact that he is the first person in Australia to die with the flu.

Yes, it was a harsh one week couple of nights alright. I was really ill – fever, chills, aching body, migraine, loss of appetite, cough (still going but don’t worry you wont get the virus), but thankfully I wasn’t vomiting for that 3 days or so. After that, with regular consumption of the tablets given by the health department, I was on the road to recovery in no time.

I certainly do not believe the virus has the ability to kill me, but of course if the symptoms were ignored and if I had chosen to sleep it off, it would’ve been much more serious than this.

So, if you’re having any of the symptoms that I had experienced, please do yourself and your loved ones a favour – contact your local GP immediately. The virus is not that bad-ass at all IF you have it prevented in the first place.

The Standstill

I have to confess that I have not held my D60 for a while now although I have faithfully brought my gear to uni every Monday to Wednesday. There are just so many things going on in uni and personal life that I have decided to put photography to a standstill. I’m afraid I need to re-organise my time completely. Perhaps with a start to an earlier sleep?

On a totally unrelated note, I have finally received my photo book which compiles 20 of my 2008 and early 2009 photos from BigW. Yes, BigW has a photo lab which prints your photos on books, canvasses, etc. It was a promotional offer of an 8×8 photo book of 20 pages (excluding cover, so 20 photos [1 photo/page]) for half price (~$10), so I decided to have a go at it. The offer has been replaced by a canvas offer which starts at around $40 which I still am quite skeptical about (the quality, I mean).

Here’s a quick look of my photo book:

ChanRaymond dot net
The front and back cover could probably have been much better with pictures, but I was rushing to finish the photo book because I only started doing it on the last day of the offer. The annoying BigW online photo application could have been much more user friendly, but it wasn’t as fun as I had imagined it to be. They also need more font options.

Yes, you are seeing (oily) finger prints. For reasons unknown, the paper is glossy-ish, plus my choice of black background probably was a bad idea to begin with. Probably should have started with white. Purity. Innocence.

ChanRaymond dot net Photobook
First page is a pretty heavilly-edited shot of a couple of Japanese Koi fishes which belonged (notice the tense) to L’s mother. They died a few weeks after I took the shots. No, it wasn’t me.

The print quality isn’t bad at all unless you decide to grab a magnifying glass or something. If looked closely, I can see that my some photos have quite rough pixels which is not that apparent at all on my screen. But if you’re just doing this for a once-in-a-while thing, I think it’s quite worth the money. Just maintain a 15cm distance when you view the book.

The line in the middle shows some signs of strain now because it just wouldn’t stay open long enough for me to take the shot, so I had to use a wee bit of force. I should have used the polariser as well to get rid of the reflection of the Speedlight, but I just couldn’t be stuffed doing so much at this time. Yeap, the pictures are (half) fresh from the camera, after editing for the blacks anyway.

So here ya go, my mobile number (and more fingerprints). That’s the back cover by the way, and yes, I should have done more than just my contact details.

ps. Please don’t spam my phone, but instead, I’ll be eternally grateful if you would invite me to your wedding/birthday/party/etc for free photography.

p.s.s Shan has written something that I have been thinking about lately and he has really hit the nail on the head in his post the Importance of Failure. Thank you for sharing, Shan.

My Revamped Workspace

Filed under: Confessional, Other, Photography, Thoughts — Tags: , , , , , , — Raymond Chan @ 10:02 pm

I was driving past OfficeWorks last Friday after renewing my passport when I casually asked L if she wanted to drop by the store to have a quick look before we head home. “Why not?”, she said. It proved to be one of my biggest mistakes this year when we had a temporary high of furniture shopping.

It started with a computer desk which L decided to get for my Valentine’s. Then, a bookshelf to go with it. This followed with a reclining chair which I later realised that I’d need a new chair mat to go with since I’m giving my old ones to my nephew.

Total damage to the wallet after a couple of hours:

$150 bookshelf
$180 chair
$120 chair mat
$200 computer desk (thanks for the desk, L)

After a lot of heavy lifting and a LOT of assembling with the help of my mate (Jay), my room now looks completely different.

Lo and behold, my brand new, revamped workspace.

Please ignore the messy, pink (and mismatched) bed-sheet and the brown towel on the new chair.

A neater shot.

All I need now is a pot of fake plant for the desk, a small bedside table, and a coat hanger (to hang my towels and jackets). I really should have gotten all the furniture from IKEA though (I think it’s cheaper and better there). Ah wells, maybe next time.

I’m officially broke.
