DIY Flash Diffuser for Nikon SB400
April 6, 2008 | Filed Under Photography | 5 Comments
How to make your own SB-400 “flip-it” flash diffuser that costs less than $10? This one costed me $8.35 (the foam is expensive, but I can make 8 more of these diffusers in the future).
- Prepare the items (elastic birch, paper clip and white foam board).
- As shown in the pictures, slot the elastic birch into the clip and glue/sew the birch together. Make sure it’ll be tight enough to keep the bounce card steady when placed on top of the flash.
- Cut the foam to a rectangle (approx. 6×7cm, just make sure it’s slightly wider than your flash) and slot one of the two metal clips into the middle bit of the foam (refer to Diffuser Front).
- Leave the other metal clip behind the foam for support (refer to Diffuser Back).
You just made yourself a simple flip-up diffuser, ideal for close-up portraits with low ceilings. Congratulations.
Refer to gallery below for pictures and result. Credit goes to vbrhitchz for his original idea.
UPDATE: Gallery doesn’t seem to be working. Perhaps the theme is incompatible. Pictures after the jump.

Coming Soon

So I woke up late today and missed the opportunity to cover the Queer event in Murdoch university. No big deal.
I went around shopping for some stuff for my SB-400 flash - Duracell batteries, Birch braided elastic, fold back clips, and a white foam board.
Why the extra three items? Stay tuned as ChanRaymond dot net reveals his first DIY entry ASAP.
For now, time to go play badminton =P

Manual Mode
April 3, 2008 | Filed Under Gibberish, Photography | Leave a Comment
After screwing up a batch of baptism photos yesterday, I am vowing to start taking more pictures using manual mode from today onwards. To be honest, I have yet to really make full use of the manual mode of my D60 since I had gotten it.
The modes I had been using were Aperture Priority (Av) and Shutter Priority (Tv) modes. But now, no more Av. No more Tv. Had enough of them already.
No more no-brainer bounced flashes. What’s the point of bouncing to the 5m high ceiling with a SB-400 for subjects who are 5m away from me? Direct would have been much better. Seriously need to give myself a good belting. *belts*
Thank you for reading.
ps. I can’t pronounce Queer, but I might be going over to campus tomorrow to cover a Cross Campus Queer Games event (where four local uni queers come together to participate in some games) for the next issue’s METIOR, our university’s Guild Student magazine. Provided if I wake up on time =P

Reflection at AQWA II

My first post from WP2.5! I’ve just finished transferring, editing and uploading over 50 family pictures to a family photo album and it took me almost 5 full hours (minus the times I chatted, surfed the net, read blogs, checked on lenses, played mobile games, talked on the phone, idled) before I got it all done. I guess I took about a couple of hours in total =)
Reflection part two from AQWA (Aquarium of Western Australia).

This is L’s bro, J. Isn’t J one of the cutest little thing you’ve seen?
ps. I have decided to get myself a Nikkor 50mm F/1.8D lens. It’s cheap and it’s so much better than so many other lens in terms of its quality and value for money =)
