DIY Flash Diffuser for Nikon SB400

April 6, 2008 | Filed Under Photography

How to make your own SB-400 “flip-it” flash diffuser that costs less than $10? This one costed me $8.35 (the foam is expensive, but I can make 8 more of these diffusers in the future).

  1. Prepare the items (elastic birch, paper clip and white foam board).
  2. As shown in the pictures, slot the elastic birch into the clip and glue/sew the birch together. Make sure it’ll be tight enough to keep the bounce card steady when placed on top of the flash.
  3. Cut the foam to a rectangle (approx. 6×7cm, just make sure it’s slightly wider than your flash) and slot one of the two metal clips into the middle bit of the foam (refer to Diffuser Front).
  4. Leave the other metal clip behind the foam for support (refer to Diffuser Back).

You just made yourself a simple flip-up diffuser, ideal for close-up portraits with low ceilings. Congratulations.

Refer to gallery below for pictures and result. Credit goes to vbrhitchz for his original idea.

UPDATE: Gallery doesn’t seem to be working. Perhaps the theme is incompatible. Pictures after the jump.
